Happy Holidays

Families-Sorry we haven't posted in awhile, we have been busy learning! I hope everyone is enjoying their winter break. I thought it would be a good time to catch back up on our blog. This post shows photos I have taken over the last months of things we have been working on, so enjoy and Happy Holidays!

In math, we have been working on non-standard measurement!
We had to measure different objects with paper clips and record our findings.

Our classroom also turned into, "THE KINGDOM OF ING" with our magical crowns we transformed lots of words into "ing" words!

We had a blast joining up with Ms. Fiderlick's room and our Energy Basketball volunteers to make parent snowflake gifts! Which I hope you enjoyed!

I will leave you with one of my favorite pictures, the first snow.
See you in the new year!

Shapes & Mustaches!

October flew by and we have officially been in school for 50 days! Woohoo!
In math we have been working on 2D and 3D shapes. We learned the vocabulary word "vertices" and also learned about different attributes of shapes.
We first started exploring shapes by making shape scarecrows and learning each shape has it's own special attributes.
Then, we used spaghetti and play-doh to create our own shapes!
The next day, we went outside to find shapes we see every day!
We were excited to find a cylinder!
We are now experts in shapes! Ask your student about cylinders, triangles, rectangles, prisms, cones and cubes.

Finally, last week was Red Ribbon Week and Room 119 was sporting some pretty good looks.

Neon Day: Our brains are BRIGHT! We treat our bodies right!

 Character day!

And my personal favorite...mustache day! Even Jack-Jack got a mustache.

Look out for report cards at the end of the month!

See you next time,
Ms. J

Apple a day is always fun in first grade!

We had a great time learning about apples and at the apple orchard. Here is a snapshot of what we did!

We were very excited to get our very own APPLE pencils to work with this week!

We were scientist and created our apple test journals.

The best part, EATING THE APPLES! We got to taste green, red and yellow apples and decide which one we like the best!

We made predictions of what apple our class liked the best.

Our class tied and liked red and green the best!

This is us calculating our class results!

***Stay tuned for APPLE ORCHARD PICTURES :) I will put them on right here as soon as I get them!

In other news, we have been working very hard. We can't believe we have been in school for 40 days! Here are some pictures of us working, in no particular order.

Speed reading is one of our stations during DAILY 5.

We have been practicing our short vowel sounds and sorting words!

Thanks for all of your support,
Ms. Johnson

September Update

Room 119 has been very busy! We are learning something new every day. Here are just some of the things we have been working on!

We had friend interviews and worked on asking questions and recording answers.

In Health, we have been talking about getting our bodies moving! For a brain break we practiced spelling words with our bodies.

The big game was a couple of weeks ago, and we became mathematicians to predict who would win the game. Sadly, the students were right and Hawkeyes won.  (Go cyclones J )

We also have been working on Balanced Equations in Math. We are learning that the bigger number gets two dots, and the small number gets one dot. After we connect the dots we create a greater than, or less than sign.

We practiced with partners and Popsicle sticks. We checked our work by making sure the dots created an “alligator mouth” to eat bigger number!

Every Friday we have "FRIDAY FUN DAY!" We try to do a hands-on activity focusing on our main comprehension skill of the week. This week, we focused on Text Features, such as labeling. What better thing to label then your teacher?!

Lastly, don't forget about our field trip! It is Thursday, October 10th. We are very excited and will be doing lots of fun things with apples the week before, stay tuned.

Until next time,

Ms. Johnson

First Grade Beginnings

We have had a great start in first grade! We are exploring new things and learning lots. I am so proud of how hard all of my first graders are working.

Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning routines, seeing what we remembered from Kindergarten, and getting comfortable in our new room.

Here we are learning how to work in our BUILD stations.

We got our Journeys books. We were so excited to do a picture walk with our table friends.

We have been doing such a great job building stamina while reading by ourselves. It's always easier to read when you are in a comfy place!

We also made a class contract so we know the rules and expectations for the whole year. We all thought of ideas and created the rules together! We made it permanent by signing our names and adding our own personal touch.

That is it for this post. We will be showing a lot more throughout the year. Don't forget to check out the parent page! That is where our weekly spelling lists, sight words, and important information will be. Also, I have posted a copy of all of our sight words we will be working hard on. If you would like flashcards or ideas for home let me know. Last, I will be sending home our first spelling list on Monday. (sight words and spelling words are different, so much to learn in first grade!) Thank you for being such great parents! I am lucky to have you and your child.

Until next time,
Ms. Johnson

* First graders: Did you read this with your parents and answer any questions about our classroom? If you did, write down your favorite thing to do in our room and bring it to school for TWO BULLDOG STICKERS! You are a rockstar.
