We are in full bloom!

Hello families,

Wow, it's hard to believe we only have 28 days of school left! We have been working hard and finally enjoying the nice weather.
We have been focusing on plants for Science. We planted grass and lima beans and learned about the plant cycle and how plants help us every day.
We planted our lima beans in paper towels!
We made adjective rainbows about ourselves to add to our garden.

We also have been focusing on our sight words. We have been practicing every day to become better readers and to be ready for second grade. Last week we took advantage of the weather and practiced outside.

Along with sight words, we have been focusing on comprehension skills such as cause and effect, characters, and main idea. When reading at home you can ask questions to help deepen their understanding of the text. I have also created some book bags that have been coming home! Please return the bags once done and I will re-fill them with new books.

We earned lunch in the classroom after everyone achieved our behavior goal!
Even though we have a month of school left, we are still in full force. Remember to check backpacks, lots of projects that have been hanging in the classroom will be coming home soon.
I am working on a class slideshow for the end of the year, so stay tuned!

We are 100 days smarter!

We made it! We had a blast on our 100th day of school. We made 100 day crowns, 100 dot pictures, ate 100 snacks, and of course did 100 exercises to work off those snacks!

I know the next 80 days are going to fly by! As a reminder, conferences are February 19 and 26. Also, I have updated the parent section with updated sight word and math practice. Thank you!

Happy Holidays

Families-Sorry we haven't posted in awhile, we have been busy learning! I hope everyone is enjoying their winter break. I thought it would be a good time to catch back up on our blog. This post shows photos I have taken over the last months of things we have been working on, so enjoy and Happy Holidays!

In math, we have been working on non-standard measurement!
We had to measure different objects with paper clips and record our findings.

Our classroom also turned into, "THE KINGDOM OF ING" with our magical crowns we transformed lots of words into "ing" words!

We had a blast joining up with Ms. Fiderlick's room and our Energy Basketball volunteers to make parent snowflake gifts! Which I hope you enjoyed!

I will leave you with one of my favorite pictures, the first snow.
See you in the new year!

Shapes & Mustaches!

October flew by and we have officially been in school for 50 days! Woohoo!
In math we have been working on 2D and 3D shapes. We learned the vocabulary word "vertices" and also learned about different attributes of shapes.
We first started exploring shapes by making shape scarecrows and learning each shape has it's own special attributes.
Then, we used spaghetti and play-doh to create our own shapes!
The next day, we went outside to find shapes we see every day!
We were excited to find a cylinder!
We are now experts in shapes! Ask your student about cylinders, triangles, rectangles, prisms, cones and cubes.

Finally, last week was Red Ribbon Week and Room 119 was sporting some pretty good looks.

Neon Day: Our brains are BRIGHT! We treat our bodies right!

 Character day!

And my personal favorite...mustache day! Even Jack-Jack got a mustache.

Look out for report cards at the end of the month!

See you next time,
Ms. J

Apple a day is always fun in first grade!

We had a great time learning about apples and at the apple orchard. Here is a snapshot of what we did!

We were very excited to get our very own APPLE pencils to work with this week!

We were scientist and created our apple test journals.

The best part, EATING THE APPLES! We got to taste green, red and yellow apples and decide which one we like the best!

We made predictions of what apple our class liked the best.

Our class tied and liked red and green the best!

This is us calculating our class results!

***Stay tuned for APPLE ORCHARD PICTURES :) I will put them on right here as soon as I get them!

In other news, we have been working very hard. We can't believe we have been in school for 40 days! Here are some pictures of us working, in no particular order.

Speed reading is one of our stations during DAILY 5.

We have been practicing our short vowel sounds and sorting words!

Thanks for all of your support,
Ms. Johnson
